As
one of our passions is motorsport including Formula 1 it was about time
I got to work on the Tamiya 1/12 scale version of Ferrari's 641/2 or
known as the F190. As with all Tamiya kits the packaging is very good
& the parts have little or no flash to speak of. SECTION 10 :- Floor pan
& rear wing Be very careful when fitting the chassis into the
floor pan. I found it best to get the front part of the floor into
position then lower the rear of the chassis onto where the upper &
lower parts of the side wall join by the rear axles. Only when
all the chassis is sitting in place do you put in the screws starting
from the rear of kit moving to the front. I skipped stage 47 & went onto doing the rear
wing. All of the rear wing is mainly gloss black bar the marked area
that mounts to the engine. When the wing has dried it is screwed
into place onto the engine. SECTION 11 :- Body &
front wing Not much more to do now & it's time to start
work on the body & front wing. I glued in place the wing
mirrors stalks, without the mirror insert, & the fuel cap to the
body & sprayed
the body & the nose section with 2 coats of Ferrari red giving the
first coat a light sanding & then cleaning it down before the final
one to remove any dirt or dust.
While this was drying I set to work on the front
wing & you just need to follow the stages 50 & 51 to get the
wing prepared & this was given a coat of gloss black. If the coat
is thin enough you can still get the patterning of the moulded parts to
come through. The nose section was then glued to the completed front
wing & allowed to set.
All that remains to be done in this section is to put in the windscreen of whichever driver you are going to do the kit for, as they are different heights, & for the mirror inserts I used a small bit of left over foil to represent the reflective glass & glued them into the stalks.
SECTION 12:- Final assembly Nearly finished race fans... I went back to stage
47 & made the air intake box, sanded down the joins & gave it a
coat of the gold / yellow mix used on the floor pan. This was
glued into position on top of the engine. You could just rest it on top
if you want to if you are going to show the interior engine bay
for display. Before putting the body onto the car I covered
the headrest with the seat material & then glued it to the inside
of the body, which again you have to choose which driver it is for as
the size is different. To make the decal stage easier I put the
body & front wing/nose decals on before mounting them on the car as
it is easier to handle these as smaller pieces. Only
now did I fit the display & steering wheel to the steering
shaft. The decals that go on the side walls & rear wing were
put in place & allowed to dry. This was to stop any damage to them
when picking up the model before the decals had fully set. The
last stage for me was the wheels & was a setback/ failure. I
had no problem painting the wheels, putting
the tyres on & even the inner decals on the wheels, the problem was
the tyre decals. I tried 3 times to get the white decals to go on
the rubber & each time it was a mess (so tips from fellow model
makers please). In the end I thought it would make a mess of the
entire
finish so scrubbed them off & left the tyres blank. Well there is the finished car & I hope you
like the finished result.
